Take both. The Snub .38 Revolver is your first gun and your only firearm for hours; the 1911 arrives in Union Apartments and is the better pick for the 4B boss because it reloads a full magazine at once.

This is not a branching choice. You get the Snub .38 Revolver in the opening act and the 1911 Service Pistol later, in Union Apartments, and you keep both. The real question is which one to carry loaded and which one to spend ammunition on.

The 1911 wins on handling, because it reloads an entire magazine at once while the revolver feeds one round at a time. The revolver wins on availability, because you will have it for the first several hours when the 1911 is still locked in a supervisor's box.

Where do you get each gun?

The Revolver is in the Grizzly Suite at the Crimson Bear Motel, on a chair, after you open the suite with the keycard from the changing room. It is the first firearm in the game and it arrives during the main story, not as an optional find.

The 1911 is in the Union Apartments supervisor code box, opened with 1C, 3A, 2A, 3C. The four clippings inside apartment 1A point at the four tenants in that order, and the box sits next to the floor 4 button.

Neither weapon can be missed permanently. Both sit in rooms you have to pass through.

The capacity difference is why the revolver feels worse in a long fight even though its damage is fine. Five rounds, reloaded individually, is a bad rhythm against anything that closes distance.

Why the 1911 is easier to use

Silver Pines has no crosshair. You aim by lining the barrel up with the target, which is workable at medium range and awkward in a panic. The 1911's full-magazine reload removes half of that problem, because you spend less time standing still with an empty gun.

That is also why one weapon guide calls it the best gun for the 4B boss. The Union Apartments fight is close-quarters and relentless, and a five-round cylinder that reloads one shell at a time is the wrong tool for it.

Why the revolver still matters

Because it is the only gun you have for the first third of the game. The motel, the general store, the church hill approach and the first bosses all happen before Union Apartments, and the revolver is what you carry through them.

It is also the recommended option for the tunnel boss, where its damage per shot is enough and the range is short enough that the reload rhythm does not punish you. The shotgun is the alternative there, not the 1911.

Upgrades for both

The revolver's upgrade is the Six-Shot Cylinder, which adds a sixth chamber. It is the most involved item in the game: take the Metal Handle from the ventilation shaft in Cell A, use it to open the cold storage drawer holding the Weapon Case Key on the body's coat, then combine the case with the Weapon Utility Case from the armory.

The 1911's upgrade is the Attachable Laser Sight, found in the crank box at the Downtown Ammo Zone. It is the closest thing to a reticle in the game, and it changes the pistol from a gun you point to a gun you aim.

Both upgrades are optional. Neither affects an achievement directly, though the inventory-upgrade achievement sends you to the same shops.

Which gun for which boss?

The pattern is simple: slow, armoured bosses reward the 1911's reload; fast, close bosses reward the revolver's damage; anything at range rewards the rifle.

  • Union Apartments 4B — 1911, because of the reload.
  • Deputy Roberts and the Church Hill siege — Model 7 Rifle.
  • Sewer gas boss — shotgun with slugs, not a handgun.
  • Tunnel boss — revolver or shotgun.

The Model 7 Rifle is in the Sheriff's Office armory, behind the armory door, with the key on the bed in Cell B. It is not a handgun and it is not part of this comparison, but it is the correct answer to two of the harder fights.

Ammunition and why it decides the argument

Enemies do not drop loot, so every round comes from a vendor, a crate or a scripted pickup. That makes the two guns compete for resources rather than complement each other.

The practical answer is to carry the 1911 as your default and keep the revolver as a backup for when pistol ammunition runs dry. Do not split ammunition evenly; commit to one and treat the other as an emergency.

Guns never lose durability, so there is no maintenance cost to carrying both. Only melee weapons break, which is why a knife or a bat is a consumable and a pistol is an investment.

What about melee weapons?

Melee is a fallback rather than a build. Knives and bats have durability and break, and the Mended Tooth memento sharpens the trade by adding 15 percent melee damage while increasing durability loss by 25 percent.

Guns never lose durability, so every hour you spend swinging a bat is an hour your pistol is not degrading. That asymmetry is the design pushing you toward firearms even when ammunition is scarce.

The one exception is stealth. A melee takedown costs no ammunition, and on Survival Horror that saving is worth the risk.

Where to buy ammunition

Vendors restock, but stock is finite per visit, and the Ammo Zone in Downtown is the dedicated supplier. Buying out the pistol rounds every time you pass is the simplest way to keep both handguns fed.

Money comes from safes, drawers and exploration rather than kills. That is why the cash safes listed on the codes hub matter: 66666 and 1893 exist to fund ammunition.

Do not spend everything on healing. A syringe you never use is a wasted purchase; a box of rounds you do use is progress.

The verdict

Use the revolver until Union Apartments, then switch to the 1911 and fit the laser sight as soon as you can. Keep the revolver loaded as a fallback rather than selling or storing it.

If you are heading into the 4B fight now, the walkthrough covers the route in, and the codes hub has the 1C/3A/2A/3C sequence if the supervisor box is still shut.
